Feeding Your Houseplants: How to Nourish Your Indoor Jungle for Lush, Vibrant Growth
By The Jungle Room Plant Co.
Just like us, houseplants need regular meals to stay healthy and thrive. While light and water are essential, proper nutrition is what powers strong growth, vibrant foliage, and resistance to pests and disease. If you’ve noticed slow growth, pale leaves, or a lackluster appearance, your plants might be hungry.
In this post, we’ll break down why plant nutrition matters, how often to feed, and which plant foods we recommend—featuring some of our top sellers at The Jungle Room: Fox Farm Grow Big, Fox Farm Big Bloom, We The Wild GROW Concentrate, and Superthrive Foliage Pro.
Why Feed Houseplants?
Indoor plants rely on potting mix for nutrients, but over time, those nutrients get depleted through watering and root uptake. Fertilizing replenishes essential macro and micronutrients like nitrogen (for leaf growth), phosphorus (for root strength), and potassium (for overall health).
Without regular feeding, plants may:
Grow more slowly
Develop yellow or pale leaves
Drop leaves prematurely
Become more susceptible to pests
When to Feed
Spring & Summer: Prime growing season. There are plenty of opinions on this, but we’ve found that giving our plants a mild dose of plant food with each watering works best. Keeping feedings gentle and consistent helps avoid the risk of nutrient burn.
Fall & Winter: Growth slows. Cut back or stop feeding unless the plant is actively pushing out new growth under grow lights.

Made from earthworm castings and bat guano, this gentle formula enhances root health, microbial activity, and nutrient uptake. While designed for flowering, it’s excellent as a year-round tonic for houseplants.
Use it when: You want a gentler feed or are supporting flowering plants like Anthuriums or Orchids.
Dilution: 4 tsp per gallon of water
Pro Tips for Feeding Success
Water first if the soil is dry. Never fertilize thirsty plants—it can burn roots.
Rotate between feeds. You can alternate formulas or blend compatible ones to give your plants a nutrient buffet.
Watch the leaves. New growth should be vibrant and firm. If you see browning tips or wilting, adjust your feeding schedule or dilution rate.
Flush occasionally. Once a month, water heavily to rinse out any built-up salts.
